Piano Lessons – How Much Do Piano Lessons Cost?

It’s an interesting word, “cost.”&nsp; A man was very proud of the second-hand motorcar he ought recently. He said got it at a argain price.&nsp; The prolem was, from thereon in the cost to him was enormous.&nsp; Everything he imagined to go wrong with his “argain” did go wrong.&nsp; To get it to work properly and safely he ended up with a cost nearly doule that of the original.

If we apply this tale as an analogy for the cost of piano lessons, it is possile to end up with the same result.&nsp; It’s natural for us to want the est of lessons for the least price availale, thinking we’ve struck a good deal, ut it’s far from natural for us to e satisfied with elow ordinary results.

Depending on a range of factors, piano lessons can e anything from $25-$35 per half-hour up to $40-$80 per hour.&nsp; It is recommended at the eginning stage, to settle for half-hour lessons as this helps to diminish information overload.&nsp;

Added to the cost per lesson, the student may also e required to purchase some additional piano tuition ooks along with some CD’s & DVD’s.&nsp; If that’s the case then the cost of these could range anywhere from $15-$60, maye more.&nsp; If we add those costs to his or her weekly lesson at the minimum $25 price, then after merely ten or twelve lessons it starts to get rather expensive for the average person.&nsp; $300 could get lown away in no time with possily very little to show for it.&nsp;

Even if the value is reasonale, the question still to e asked is, how many more lessons will the student need to arrive at a satisfactory standard?&nsp; In other words, once the asics are fully covered, how long will it take for him or her to tackle the most advanced techniques?&nsp; How many more lessons will e needed until he or she is good enough to do solo gigs or play with a and?

What aout the different styles of playing? Rock, Classical, Ragtime, Country, Boogie-Woogie, Blues, Jazz, and Latin – is the student getting the opportunity to learn these so as to discover which one suits est?&nsp; Even more importantly, is he or she eing encouraged to develop a style of their own through the lending together of different styles?

Let’s come ack to cost.&nsp; If the teacher promised “yes” to all those questions, what would it cost?&nsp; How long would it take?&nsp; There is a piano course that offers all this and more.&nsp; It’s called Learn & Master Piano and it comes at a cost nowhere as expensive as the average piano teacher in town.

It is often said that quality is rememered long after the price is forgotten.&nsp; Well, Learn & Master Piano is most certainly a quality piano course, ut it comes at only a fraction of the cost y comparison to anything else around.&nsp; That makes the price very forgettale.

Not A Word On It

Not A Word On It

Guitarist Pete Carr is primarily known as a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. His résumé also includes being a member of Duane and Gregg Allman’s Hourglass, and for declining an invitation to join the Allman Brothers Band — they asked Dickey Betts later. Carr has played on dozens, if not hundreds, of recordings by everyone from Rod Stewart and Bob Seger to Bobby Womack, Wilson Pickett, and Willie Nelson, to mention a few. He also had two solo recordings: the first, Not a Word on It, was issued in 1975 on the independent Big Tree and was later licensed by Atlantic. Recorded at Wishbone Studio in Muscle Shoals, Carr acted as songwriter, lead guitarist, arranger, and producer. He employed the use of bassist Lenny LeBlanc, drummer Roger Clark, percussionist Tom Roady, and Harvey Thompson on saxophone. There are a slew of keyboard players here, including Chuck Leavell (the inner sleeve of the booklet credits him, the back cover does not), Clayton Ivey, and Tim Henson. Musically this is funky, jazz-inflected rock. Carr’s playing shines as much for its restraint as it does his tight, imaginative phrasing. Check the nocturnal blues of the opener “Transcumbian Lover,” that feels like a cross between Roy Buchanan and Peter Green’s more refined moments. Carr’s tone is biting, but every note he plays is perfectly emotive and musically sumptuous. The funky “Foxfire,” features organ, piano, and synth all tripling with his guitars. “On Lucifer’s Knee” uses a funked-up bassline and a Rhodes to create a backdrop for some mean guitar playing that moves inside and through the rhythm. “Broken Stone” is a straight-up Southern rock & roll boogie that moves. “Twisted Hair” is an anthemic closing statement with dual leads, acoustic piano, and shifting time signatures in a rock & roll guitar hero setting. Carr’s work is pretty much for guitar-o-philes and production heads, but the music is solidly played and the album is enjoyable throughout. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Chuck Leavell – Organ, Keyboards; Clayton Ivey – Keyboards; Harvey Thompson – Saxophone; Lenny LeBlanc – Bass; Pete Carr – Guitar; Roger Clark – Drums; Tim Henson – Synthesizer, Keyboards; Tom Roady – Percussion

Playing the Word

Playing the Word

$11.18

Spoken word can be incredibly self-indulgent, and some of it is simply verbal masturbation. But when it is done well, spoken word can be a pleasure — and Playing the Word is a prime example. This 70-minute CD, which finds pianist Mike Melvoin collaborating with poet Dan Jaffe, favors spoken word of the jazz variety; while Melvoin plays his piano, Jaffe thoughtfully reflects on jazz’s rich history and looks back on the contributions of Charlie “Bird” Parker, Charles Mingus, Count Basie, and others. Jaffe does not go out of his way to be abstract, and he avoids being overly academic. One can learn a lot about Bird’s personality listening to this disc, but thankfully, Playing the Word doesn’t get into any of the dorky “jazzucation” nonsense that some jazz singers have inflicted on their audiences. What is “jazzucation?” If a singer writes lyrics for, say, Thelonious Monk’s “Epistrophy” and all his/her lyrics talk about is Monk’s methods of playing chord changes, that is “jazzucation” at its most annoying — and sadly, that type of thing has been done much too often in vocal jazz. Although jazz poetry is not the same as jazz singing, the “jazzucation” concept can, unfortunately, be carried over to the spoken word realm. But that never happens on Playing the Word. Melvoin and Jaffe have the good taste to stay away from boring, ultra-technical discussions of jazz on this 2006 release — and when Jaffe is talking about Bird or Basie, his words are warm and inviting rather than corny. Playing the Word is well worth obtaining if one is looking for an album of spoken word jazz poetry that is insightful and relatively accessible. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

Word to the Wise

If a guest list of marquee names is what it takes to finally bring Bill Kirchen the attention he deserves, then so be it. This Telecaster master has never made an album that’s less than outstanding, but hopefully the presence of Elvis Costello, Dan Hicks, Nick Lowe, Maria Muldaur, the late Norton Buffalo, Paul Carrack, and others on Word to the Wise will do the trick. Kirchen began his career as lead guitarist for Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen in the ’70s, and the ol’ Commander himself, George Frayne, returns to engage in some fancy boogie-woogie ivory tickling on “I Don’t Work That Cheap,” a Kirchen original (co-written by guitarist/vocalist Blackie Farrell, who also guests) that posits an alternate universe historical travelog. Costello’s star turn comes in the blues-infused “Man in the Bottom of the Well,” and it’s one of the more riveting vocals he’s laid down in some time. Dan Hicks co-wrote and co-sings the title track with Kirchen, and it could easily have been a prime-era Hot Licks staple. Chris O’Connell, former Asleep at the Wheel vocalist, engages in a weepy duet with Kirchen on Roger Miller’s “Husbands and Wives,” Muldaur’s trademark bawdy blues style lights up the barroom shuffle “Ain’t Got No Time for the Blues,” and Lowe and Carrack team up Everly Brothers-style on “Shelly’s Winter Love,” borrowed from the Merle Haggard songbook. The set ends on a semi-sad note with Kirchen’s “Valley of the Moon,” not because there’s anything gloomy about the song itself, but because it’s one of the last times the always-stellar harmonica of Norton Buffalo would be heard in a recording studio. So much for the guests — what about the host? As always, Kirchen’s guitar work is faultless. He’s a player who always knows exactly what to play when, never overstays his welcome, enjoys the element of surprise, and keeps things invitingly simple and clean. As a vocalist, he’s never going to be Sinatra, but he embraces his material and delivers it with panache and assuredness, just as he’s done for the past four decades, and that’s more than good enough. A word to the wise: if you’ve yet to fall prey to the proto-Americana charms of Bill Kirchen, this is as good a place to start as any. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, Rovi Performers: Bucky Lindsey – Vocals (Background); Lisa Best – Vocals (Background); Louise Kirchen – Vocals (Background); Norton Buffalo – Harmonica; Peter Bonta – Mandolin, Accordion; Austin DeLone – Piano, Guitar (Acoustic), Organ, Vocals, Piano (Electric);

Word of Mouf

Word of Mouf

Ludacris’ second album for Def Jam, Word of Mouf, is a superstar affair that aims for mass appeal with a broad array of different styles. Nearly every track features some sort of collaborator, either hitmaking producers like Timbaland and Organized Noize, big-name rappers like Mystikal and Twista, hook-singing crooners like Nate Dogg and Jagged Edge, or fellow Disturbing tha Peace group members I-20, Shawnna, Lil’ Fate, and Tity Boi — and sometimes a combinations of these various ingredients. The resulting album is surely impressive, propelled by lively production, colorful guests, and an omnipresent touch of humor. More hilarious than before, Ludacris lightens his lyrical style here, leaving behind much of thuggishness that had characterized his previous album, Back for the First Time, in favor of witty puns and sly innuendoes. A particularly humorous highlight is the previously released (on the Rush Hour 2 soundtrack) single “Area Codes,” a tongue-twisting, good-spirited Jazze Pha production. Less humorous though likewise standout is the lead single, “Rollout (My Business),” a rallying Timbaland production with a simple yet inescapable hook. Other highlights include the Organized Noize-produced booty-shaker “Saturday (Oooh Oooh!),” the Jagged Edge-sung “Freaky Thangs,” and the Beats by the Pound-esque posse track “Move Bitch.” There’s also a hidden bonus track here that’s likewise an explosive collaboration, the Jermaine Dupri-led “Welcome to Atlanta.” There are a lot of highlights here; however, amid all of these various team-ups you do lose a little bit of the sincere, personal edge that had characterized much of Ludacris’ debut. Even so, it’s overall a worthy exchange, since there’s something here on Word of Mouf for everyone, signaling Ludacris’ leap from the Dirty South underground to the pop-rap mass market. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi Performers: Jazze Pha – Vocals (Background); Ludacris – Rap, Vocals; 4-Ize – Vocals; Jeff Williams – Vocals; Marvin “Chanz” Parkman – Piano; Mimi – Vocals; Parish Williams – Vocals; Ray Murray – Bass; Roxye Dock – Vocals; Scarface – Vocals; Shawty – Vocals;

What's My Favorite Word?

What’s My Favorite Word?

$5.58

Ever since Too Short returned from his brief retirement in 1999 with Can’t Stay Away, he sounded increasingly comfy with letting his supporting cast flavor his albums, and What’s My Favorite Word? is no different. Short invites his usual guests — longtime Cali standbys Ant Banks, E-40, and B-Legit; Atlanta rabble-rouser Lil’ Jon; and the one and only George Clinton — along with a few surprise ones: Twista, Petey Pablo, Big Gipp, and U.G.K. members Bun B and Pimp C. This lively cast of characters certainly colors the album and makes it more than just another Too Short album, even if that’s precisely what What’s My Favorite Word? is. The highlight here is Lil’ Jon’s two-part “Quit Hatin’,” which begins like your typical Eastside Boyz club-banger à la “Bia’, Bia’” and “I Don’t Give A…” and then transitions into a screwed-style interpretation given a further Texan feel when Pimp C steps up. Elsewhere, Short spits mostly pimp game as you’d expect, though perhaps a bit more laconically and with a bit more sang hooks than usual. What’s My Favorite Word? isn’t extraordinary relative to Short’s dozen-plus other albums, yet should still please his fans, particularly those who enjoy his usual post-Gettin’ It supporting cast. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi Performers: Shanell Woodgett – Vocals (Background); D’Wayne Wiggins – Vocals, Guitar; L.A. Dre – Piano; Pimpin’ Ken – Vocals

A Language Of Emotion

$25.98

These lively, informative essays, all related to music, are as accessible as a chatty bedside reader. A central theme is listener response, and the techniques and structures that mold it.The story starts with sound waves, the ear, and the brain. Did song come before speech? Was it a factor in evolution? Some think singing helps complete the wiring of that organic work-in-progress, the infant brain.Check out the frequency doubling that built our familiar scale. Learn where the word ‘organizing’ came from. Follow development of the instruments as they achieved volume, accurate intonation, range, and consistent timbre.There is criticism, but little disparagement. Any willing audience deserves respect. Musical examples come from Tin Pan Alley as often as the opera. Whether at a jazz club or the concert hall, the writer cannot hide his impatience with artists seeking to educate or intimidate.Music can be recreation or vocation. Does your instrument match your personality or some physical attribute? We instantly distinguish a bell, a piano, and a guitar; why not a clarinet, flute, or violin? What does the conductor do? A Language of Emotion embraces such matters.The relatively imprecise science of Psychology examines music working its magic. We all have favorites. Is it hype and marketing and peer influence, or do our choices make personal statements? Music, politics, religion, and social forces are twisted threads in the fabric of civilization.Nothing reflects the spirit of an era better than the works of its most creative individuals. In most cases, they blend smoothly in sequence. Monteverdi, Beethoven, and Stravinsky, to name just three, clearly got ahead of the curve and helped define the world around them.

Almost eighteen, Anastasia was almost burned out At least four hours a day at the piano, plus school work and nothing else can do that to a girl who at one time could giggle and say, “Course I’ve got a name.” She watched her sister Helen dress for dates with Tex Whitmore, half owner of the Ching Chong Gardens, the upscale nightclub housed in what had originally been a bordello and Speak Easy. She wondered why she herself could only wear white blouses and drab gray skirts and why was forbidden to play in public while she knew she had been ready for the concert stage years earlier. Only once had she disobeyed. That was on her sixteenth birthday and she and Paul had snuck out. That memory of playing the piano with a jazz group down on 17th Street was golden. She longed to go back. There was a reason that Kansas City in the thirties was called Jazz Town.The night Helen borrowed the green evening gown from the shop, Asia was on the edge of rebellion. As she laid her hand on Timmy’s and walked into the club imagining how it would be after a successful concert, she returned the slight smile from the man on the staircase. Leslie Saunders slid his glass across the bar for a refill when he saw that smile. Benjamin Alice was both friend and boss, but they didn’t need that kind of trouble. Word had it that people were getting tired of a city run by a crooked politician.Helen claimed that when Ben spoke to a beautiful woman, his voice sounded like one of the big cats at the zoo in Swope Park. She didn’t like the way her sister and Ben looked at each other during the tango, but she nearly panicked when he led her to the piano.Ben laughed when Asia picked out a one finger version of Mary Had a Little Lamb, was amused when she played Ave Maria in the crowded nightclub, and was completely captivated even before she segued into Rhapsody in Blue. He had a brief picture of her wearing Granny Mari’s emeralds, and gave no thought to the supposed curse which

Chapters: Golden Slumbers, Rockin’ the Suburbs, Tiny Dancer, Rock This Bitch, Carry That Weight, You Don’t Know Me, Still Fighting It, the Luckiest, Lonely Christmas Eve. Excerpt: from the album Abbey Road “Golden Slumbers” is a song by The Beatles, part of the climactic medley on their 1969 album Abbey Road. The song begins the progression that leads to the end of the album and is followed by “Carry That Weight.” The two songs were recorded together as a single piece, and both were written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon/McCartney). “Golden Slumbers” is based on the poem “Cradle Song”, a lullaby by the dramatist Thomas Dekker. The poem appears in Dekker’s 1603 comedy Patient Grissel. McCartney saw sheet music for Dekker’s lullaby at his father’s home in Liverpool, left on a piano by his stepsister Ruth McCartney. Unable to read music at the time, he created his own melody and arrangement. McCartney uses only the first four lines of the original poem, with minor word changes. McCartney was the lead vocalist. He begins the song in a soft tone appropriate for a lullaby, with piano, bass guitar, and string section accompaniment. Beginning with the line “Golden slumbers fill your eyes”, the drums come in and McCartney switches to a stronger tone, both of which emphasize the switch to the refrain. McCartney said, “I remember trying to get a very strong vocal on it, because it was such a gentle theme, so I worked on the strength of the vocal on it, and ended up quite pleased with it.” The main recording session for “Golden Slumbers”/”Carry That Weight” was on 2 July 1969. John Lennon was not present. He was injured in a motor vehicle accident in Scotland on 1 July 1969, and was hospitalized there until 6 July. Additional vocals were added in an overd… More:

Excerpt: Earl Kenneth Hines, universally known as Earl “Fatha” Hines, (December 28, 1903 April 22, 1983) was “one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz”. Earl Hines was born in the Pittsburgh suburb of Duquesne, Pennsylvania. His father was a cornetist and leader of Pittsburgh’s Eureka Brass Band, his stepmother a church organist. Hines at first intended to follow his father’s example and play cornet but “blowing” hurt him behind the ears while the piano didn’t. He took classical piano lessons and played organ in his local Baptist church but also developed an ear for popular show tunes and was able to remember and play songs he heard in theaters. Hines claimed that he was playing piano around Pittsburgh “before the word ‘jazz’ was even invented”. At the age of 17, Hines moved away from home to take a job playing with Lois Deppe
