Anna Goldsworthy was nine years old when she met Eleanora Sivan, the charismatic Russian emigre and world-class pianist who became her piano teacher. "Piano Lessons "is the story of what Mrs. Sivan brought to Anna’s lessons: a love of music, a respect for life, a generous spirit, and the courage to embrace a musical life.Beautifully written and strikingly honest, "Piano Lessons "takes the reader on a journey into the heart and meaning of music. As Anna discovers passion and ambition, confronts doubt and disappointment, and learns about much more than tone and technique, Mrs. Sivan’s wisdom guides her: ""We are not teaching piano playing. We are teaching philosophy and life and music digested." "What is intuition? Knowledge that has come inside.""""My darling, we must sit and work."""Piano Lessons "reminds us all how an extraordinary teacher can change a life completely. A work that will appeal to all music lovers and anyone who has ever taken a music lesson, "Piano Lessons "will also touch the heart of anyone who has ever loved a teacher.

"Piano Lessons" is Noah Adams’s delightful and moving chronicle of his fifty-second year–a year already filled with long, fast workdays and too little spare time–as he answers at last a lifelong call: to learn to play the piano. The twelve monthly chapters span from January–when after decades of growing affection for keyboard artists and artisans he finally plunges in and buys a piano–through December, when as a surprise Christmas present for his wife he dresses in a tuxedo and, in flickering candlelight, snow falling outside the windows, he attempts their favorite piece of music, a difficult third-year composition he’s been struggling with in secret to get to this very moment. Among the up-tempo triumphs and unexpected setbacks, Noah Adams interweaves the rich history and folklore that surround the piano. And along the way, set between the ragtime rhythms and boogie-woogie beats, there are encounters with–and insights from–masters of the keyboard, from Glenn Gould and Leon Fleisher ("I was a bit embarrassed," he writes; "telling Leon Fleisher about my ambitions for piano lessons is like telling Julia Child about plans to make toast in the morning") to Dr. John and Tori Amos. As a storyteller, Noah Adams has perfect pitch. In the foreground here, like a familiar melody, are the challenges of learning a complex new skill as an adult, when enthusiasm meets the necessary repetition of tedious scales at the end of a twelve-hour workday. Lingering in the background, like a subtle bass line, are the quiet concerns of how we spend our time and how our priorities shift as we proceed through life. For "Piano Lessons" is really an adventure story filled with obstacles to overcome and grand leaps forward, eccentric geniuses and quiet moments of pre-dawn practice, as Noah Adams travels across country and keyboard, pursuing his dream and keeping the rhythm.

Don’t let the title of Francesco Tristano’s CD deceive you, for he plays acoustic piano on all the selections, enhanced by occasional ghostly electronic background trimmings. It is not necessarily a jazz piano recording, but one where he has paid attention to the minimalist 20th and 21st century players influenced by Steve Reich. Tristano’s music is also keyed into techno (modifying a tune by Autechre) and alternative rock, some ethnic elements, and pure improvisational keyboard stylings. The introductory piece, “Hello,” establishes the repeat-line concept with attributions, different accents and dynamics, bouncy and soulful components, and some improvisation. “Strings of Life,” an adaptation of Detroit techno pioneer Derrick May’s “Strings,” exploits underground phantom effects in a two-chord development that builds momentum. A rumbling free improv discourse during “Ap” features a string of mini-arpeggios, while “The Melody” shows Tristano in joyous counterintuitive play. Three selections team Tristano with the brilliant Lebanese pianist Rami Khalife (his CD Scene from Hellek is a must-buy), and they display instant rapport. Tapping the pianos inside and out during “Jeita” to start, they move into a fractured theme and then a train trip with consistent forward motion. “The Bells” is closest to Steve Reich’s concept — slow, steady, then speeding within a controlled melodic framework — while “Hymn” takes a dramatic and boisterous turn with a sense of purpose that speeds past the Reich visage. Tristano is in many ways a sensible and somewhat predictable player, but takes sufficient risks and uses shadings of gray and blue, a bit of Latin samba as on “Two Minds One Sound,” and lighthearted romanticism or delicate simplicity offering diversity beyond strict minimalism. A most enjoyable and interesting project, it should please most progressive music listeners, and serve as a credible prelude to future works. ~ Michael G. A step-by-step approach to solo jazz improvisation for piano. Learn to improvise using the techniques pioneered by piano greats Lenny Tristano and Dave McKenna. This methodical approach to learning the art of solo jazz piano improvisation will free your creative sense of music. It begins with a review of chord symbol interpretation, walks through bass line development, and ends with how to play several melodic lines simultaneously in stimulating musical conversation. You’ll learn how to develop solos that embellish and support the melody, and use lead sheets to help you generate your own musical ideas. Twenty-one lessons present techniques, practice exercises, and tunes based on jazz standards. Notated transcriptions of sample improvisations illustrate each lesson’s technique, and the accompanying CD lets you hear a master improviser put these ideas to work.
