August Wilson has already given the American theater such spell-binding plays about the black experience in 20th-century America as Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom," "Joe Turner’s Come and Gone," " and the Pulitzer Prize-winning, Fences. In his second Pulitzer Prize-winner, The Piano Lesson," " Wilson has fashioned his most haunting and dramatic work yet. At the heart of the play stands the ornately carved upright piano which, as the Charles family’s prized, hard-won possession, has been gathering dust in the parlor of Berniece Charles’s Pittsburgh home. When Boy Willie, Berniece’s exuberant brother, bursts into her life with his dream of buying the same Mississippi land that his family had worked as slaves, he plans to sell their antique piano for the hard cash he needs to stake his future. But Berniece refuses to sell, clinging to the piano as a reminder of the history that is their family legacy. This dilemma is the real "piano lesson," reminding us that blacks are often deprived both of the symbols of their past and of opportunity in the present.

Written and directed by Sally Potter (Orlando), The Tango Lesson is the story of a filmmaker, Sally (Sally Potter), who becomes dissatisfied with her latest screenplay (vividly illustrated in luscious color) and stumbles upon an Argentinean tango dancer (Pablo Veron). She places herself under Pablo’s tutelage and together they explore their spiritual and artistic connections. It soon becomes clear that they each want very different things from each other. Potter’s raw examination of the artist’s struggle for authenticity, set against the human frailties of ego, jealousy, lust and insecurity, makes for a tense drama — beautifully photographed in black and white and set in Paris and Buenos Aires. Newly remastered.

Note by Note: A Celebration of the Piano Lesson

Note by Note: A Celebration of the Piano Lesson

$3.48

In this luminous book, Tricia Tunstall explores the enduring fascination of the piano lesson. Even as everything else about the world of music changes, the piano lesson retains its appeal. Drawing on her own lifelong experience as a student and teacher, Tunstall writes about the mysteries and delights of piano teaching and learning. What is it that happens in a piano lesson to make it such a durable ritual? In a world where music is heard more often on the telephone and in the elevator than in the concert hall, why does the piano lesson still have meaning in the lives of children? What does it matter whether one more child learns to play Bach’s Minuet in G? "Note by Note" is in part a memoir in which Tunstall recalls her own childhood piano teachers and their influence. As she observes, the piano lesson is unlike the experience of being coached on an athletic team or taught in a classroom, in that it is a one-on-one, personal communication. Physically proximate, mutually concentrating on the transfer of a skill that is often arduous, complicated and frustrating, teacher and student occasionally experience breakthroughs-moments of joy when the student has learned something, mastered a musical passage or expressed a feeling through music. The relationship is not only one-way: teaching the piano is a lifelong endeavor of particular intensity and power. Anyone who has ever studied the piano-or wanted to-will cherish this gem of a book.

Lesson Before Dying, A (DVD)

Lesson Before Dying, A (DVD)

$7.95

Based on the New York Times No.1 bestselling novel and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, Don Cheadle and Cicely Tyson star in ‘A Lesson Before Dying.” Grant Wiggins (Don Cheadle) has become resigned to racial injustice in the south. Returning to his home town with a college degree, he continues to teach in the same one-room school of his youth. Struggling to make a difference in an oppressive time and place, Grant is called upon by two local women, Tante Lou and Miss Emma, to visit the town prison. There, Jefferson, a simple young man, has been convicted of a murder he did not commit and sentenced to die like an animal. Jefferson is full of rage and resentment, and the women are convinced that somehow he must be taught to die not like an animal, but like a man. It falls upon the teacher to enrich a life he cannot save and, in so doing, somehow redeem his own, by teaching one young man “A Lesson Before Dying.”

Gus and Grandpa and the Piano Lesson

Gus and Grandpa and the Piano Lesson

$3.48

The tenth book in the beloved series For Gus, the longest half hour of the day is spent practicing the piano. Why can’t he be outside, shooting hoops with Ryan Mason? Even more painful are the lessons: Mrs. Moore complains about Gus’s squishy fingers. But most painful of all is the piano recital. Gus has to play a piece called "The Horse Race," and he’s not sure he will remember it. As a child, Grandpa played the violin, so he knows exactly how Gus feels. Grandpa also knows about something Gus will love — making music with others — and once again he shows Gus the way in a story with pictures that "reflect the sunny warmth of loving connections passed across generations" ("Booklist").

Excerpt: “Baby’s on Fire” “Baby’s on Fire ” is the third track on English musician Brian Eno ‘s 1973 debut album, Here Come the Warm Jets . It is an example of the predominantly glam /art rock style Eno employed at the time, praised for its guitar solo by King Crimson member Robert Fripp .Writing and recording Eno recorded “Baby’s on Fire” during the Here Come the Warm Jets sessions in September 1973 at Majestic Studios, London , where he had previously recorded the majority of his earlier material. The track was produced by Eno, who handled production and mixing duties on the bulk of the album’s recording, and was created with musicians Simon King, Marty Simon, Robert Fripp , Paul Rudolph , and John Wetton . The song is a bizarre fantasy about a photography session involving a burning infant and unthinking, laughing onlookers. Live recordings of the song have appeared on various Eno recordings, the first being June 1, 1974 , performed with Kevin Ayers , John Cale , Ollie Halsall and Eddie Sparrow. Eno spoke positively about this performance, saying, “The instruments were incredibly out of tune, so out of tune you wouldn t believe it. But it sounds fantastic. There s one little bit in it where there s a riff between the guitar and one of the bassists, and they re so out of tune it sounds like cellos. Amazing! I mean if you tried to make that sound in the studio it would have taken you ages. You wouldn t have thought of making it, in fact, it s such a bizarre sound. And the piano and guitar are quite well out of tune as well. Ha!” Musical

Keiko Doi’s mother Emiko brought her to her first piano lesson in the June following her fifth birthday. Japanese tradition holds that a child who is introduced to lessons at this time will continue in those studies for a long time. The tradition held true for Doi, who studied piano throughout her school years. Though her early training focused on classical music, in junior high school she developed an interest in jazz and began composing her own music. Some of her musical influences at this time included Stevie Wonder, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Maurice Jarre and Chick Corea. Excerpt: January 18, 1982 ) in Nevada City, California Joanna Newsom (born January 18, 1982) is an American harpist, pianist, and singer-songwriter from Nevada City, California. Newsom grew up in the small town of Nevada City, California. She was exposed to music from a young age. Her father plays guitar, and her mother is a classically trained pianist who also plays hammered dulcimer, autoharp, and conga drums. She attended a Waldorf school, where she studied theater and learned to memorize and recite long poems, a skill that she has said helps her to remember lyrics to her long songs while on tour. Newsom had known since age two or three that she wanted to play the harp. Her parents eventually agreed to sign her up for harp lessons, but the local harp teacher did not want to take on such a young student and suggested that she learn to play the piano first. After four years of piano lessons (starting when she was four), she began playing the harp, which she “loved from the first lesson onward.” Her harp teacher taught her about composition and improvisation. Newsom learned to play on progressively larger Celtic harps, until her parents bought her a full-size pedal harp in the seventh grade. Newsom studied composition and creative writing at Mills College, Oakland, California. While at Mills, she played keyboards in The Pleased. In 2002 and 2003, respectively, Newsom recorded two EPs, Walnut Whales and Yarn and Glue. These homemade recordings were intended to serve as a document of her songs, which she had previously been recording on a Fisher-Price tape recorder. These EPs were not originally intended for public distribution, but at the suggestion of Noah Georgeson (who had helped her record the songs, and who was her boyfriend at the time), she burn… More:
