Anna Goldsworthy was nine years old when she met Eleanora Sivan, the charismatic Russian emigre and world-class pianist who became her piano teacher. "Piano Lessons "is the story of what Mrs. Sivan brought to Anna’s lessons: a love of music, a respect for life, a generous spirit, and the courage to embrace a musical life.Beautifully written and strikingly honest, "Piano Lessons "takes the reader on a journey into the heart and meaning of music. As Anna discovers passion and ambition, confronts doubt and disappointment, and learns about much more than tone and technique, Mrs. Sivan’s wisdom guides her: ""We are not teaching piano playing. We are teaching philosophy and life and music digested." "What is intuition? Knowledge that has come inside.""""My darling, we must sit and work."""Piano Lessons "reminds us all how an extraordinary teacher can change a life completely. A work that will appeal to all music lovers and anyone who has ever taken a music lesson, "Piano Lessons "will also touch the heart of anyone who has ever loved a teacher.

 10 Principles for Spiritual Parenting

10 Principles for Spiritual Parenting

$13.99

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, how do we, as parents, honor the spirituality of our children? As we shuttle between school, soccer practice, piano lessons, ballet lessons, birthday parties, and doctors’ appointments, how do we find the time to encourage our children, through the ups and downs of growing up, to turn to God for guidance? In 10 Principles for Spiritual Parenting, Mimi Doe and Marsha Walch open our eyes to the spontaneous, creative, freethinking joy that characterizes a child’s innate spirituality. In ten easy-to-follow chapters containing exercises and practical suggestions, the authors point out that opportunities to express spirituality are abundant in our routine life. Talking at dinner, lighting candles, performing daily chores–all of these events have the potential to be sacred moments. Contemporary parents face unique challenges: In our media-saturated culture, children are continually exposed to violence, cynicism, and a confusing code of ethics. By offering concrete ways to help children develop positive values, Mimi Doe and Marsha Walch support parents’ efforts to counteract negative messages. 10 Principles for Spiritual Parenting is an invaluable guide for parents who yearn to help their children nurture a rich spirituality of their own.

A Good Start in Life: Understanding Your Child's Brain and Behavior

A Good Start in Life: Understanding Your Child’s Brain and Behavior

$22.95

We all want to do the best we can for our children. Nature has equipped us with an instinct to protect and nurture. Unfortunately, we have not been provided with universal rules of parenting, and so we look to experts to fill that void. But there’s so much information out there — and half of it appears to be filled with contradictory advice while the other half is mired in scientific jargon that most parents have trouble deciphering. This is especially true of the data on the intricate workings of the developing brain. It’s a daunting task to figure out just what a parent should do. The key is to listen carefully to what science is telling us. Finally, we have a sensible guide to interpret the information in straightforward and practical ways.Dr. Norbert Herschkowitz, a Swiss pediatrician and neuroscientist, and his wife, Elinore Chapman Herschkowitz, an American educator, have teamed up to write this warm, friendly book to guide parents through the formative years of their child’s life. With a specific focus on the brain, they follow the path of early childhood development from gestation to age six years. Each chapter deals with a particular phase of development. They begin with Life in the Womb — What Are You Doing in There? and Newborn — Here I Am! As parents add candles to the birthday cake, new chapters prepare them for what lies ahead. Best of all, each chapter is accompanied by a section called, To Think About. . . . These sections address practical topics such as good-night rituals, testing limits, coping with conflict, reading books together, the value of piano lessons, evaluating day-care options, and encouraging why questions.Although there are scores ofbooks that deal with early childhood development, few — if any — so artfully combine solid, reliable science with logical, clear-cut information and advice. Parents need no longer worry about missing special windows of learning opportunity. They don’t have to deal with lingering doub

A touch of Leri: The beliefs, attitudes and perceptions of an elementary student in Cyprus about his experiences in different music-making and learning practices.

$49.99

This case study explores the music-making and learning practices of an elementary student from Cyprus in different settings, inside and outside school. The musical knowledge of the 6th grade boy was gained from a diversity of music settings that covered a broad educational spectrum from highly structured and sequential to informal and enculturative. The purpose of study was to investigate student's attitudes, beliefs and feelings concerning different learning settings; the student's perceptions of the value of music experiences in these settings; and the intersections of music learning inside and outside school. The settings were school music classes, private piano lessons, community choir rehearsals, traditional folk dance ensemble, drum exploration, and composition-arrangement at home. Three themes emerged from the data. The first theme centered around the influences from others that motivated Leri's attendance and continuation in music classes. The second theme centered around the elements inherent to the settings themselves that facilitated learning and that made Leri want to engage. The last theme focused on thoughts about his future music making and the factors that affected his plans. The participant's enjoyment and valuing of the music settings was connected to his need for active and meaningful participation through which he could express his musical ideas.
