The State Theatre – Ithaca, NY 4.18.08 $14.95 Gov’t Mule The State Theatre Ithaca, NY 4.18.08 From the get-go this show was blazing hot. Brand New Angel, Bad Man Walking and Livin’ Lovin’ Maid to open the show?!? Yeah that’s right. But, the Mule, not a band to rest on their laurels, stepped it up a notch from there with Left Coast Groovies and Lola Leave Your Light On. Reeling in the rock just a bit, Endless Parade, then World Gone Wild gave the band some time to breathe and rest up for I Believe To My Soul. New World Blues, in all it’s heavy and ethereal splendor, closed out the set. Set two got underway with an unbelievable Unring The Bell and a ferocious cover of Hendrix’s Little Wing. Just prior to Drums, Love Me Do reappeared in the midst of I’m A Ram and post Drums, Trane snuck into a Third Stone From The Sun Tease. Temporary Saint and Mule brought the set to a close but perhaps the highlight of the night would have to be the encore. A jazzier than normal show, perhaps the academia was in the air, but whatever it was the Mule was improvising like crazy during such jazzy numbers as “Birth of the Mule,” and “Trane.” Covers were also in the house as Warren belted out “Have Mercy On The Criminal” to start the second set, and the crowd got involved as the band left the stage to their version of Tom Waits’ “Going Out West.” Great town, great show…. Highlights of this performance include a thunderous Rocking Horse with an Eleanor Rigby tease followed a few tracks later by a Matt Abts drums break with Karl adding in his flute.
