Arkansas Heavy Metal Musical Groups: Evanescence $10.28 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Evanescence is an American rock band founded in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. After recording private albums, the band released their first full-length album, Fallen, on Wind-up Records in 2003. Fallen sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and helped the band win two Grammy Awards. A year later, Evanescence released their first live album, Anywhere but Home, which sold more than one million copies worldwide. In 2006, the band released their second studio album, The Open Door, which sold more than five million copies. The line-up of the band has changed several times: David Hodges leaving in 2002, co-founder Moody left in 2003 (mid-tour), bassist Will Boyd in 2006, followed by guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray in 2007. The last two changes led to a hiatus, with temporary band members contributing to tour performances. In June 2009, it was announced on the Evanescence website that the band was working on new material for a third studio album for release in the second half of 2010. Evanescence was founded by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and former lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. The two met in 1994 at a youth camp in Little Rock, where Moody heard Lee playing “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” by Meat Loaf on the piano. Their first songs together were “Solitude” and “Give Unto Me”, both written by Lee, and “Understanding” and “My Immortal”, both written by Moody. The songs were edited by both artists, and they shared equal credit. Two of Lee and Moody’s songs were played on local radio stations, raising local awareness of the group and demand for a concert. The band eventually appeared live, and became one of the most popular acts in the area. Af… More: |

Excerpt: Cryptograms is the second album from Atlanta, Georgia-based indie rock group Deerhunter, released through Kranky Records on January 29, 2007 on CD and vinyl. Following the 2005 release of its first full-length album Turn It Up Faggot, Deerhunter began recording material for its next record at Rare Book Room studio in New York. This initial recording session failed, due to the physical and mental state of lead singer Bradford Cox, as well as malfunctioning equipment in the studio. The band returned to Atlanta, only giving recording a second try after encouragement from members of the band Liars. The final version of Crytograms was recorded in two separate day-long sessions, months apart, resulting in two musically distinct partsthe first includes more ambient music while the second contains more pop music elements. Cox sang most of the record’s lyrics in a stream-of-consciousness manner; they include themes of death, companionship, and Cox’s experiences with his genetic disorder Marfan syndrome. Cryptograms was generally well-received by critics, and several publications placed the album on their lists of the top albums of 2007. Deerhunter first attempted to record their second album in 2005 with folk musician Samara Lubelski at Rare Book Room studios in New York. This recording session failed, due in part to the physical and mental state of lead singer Bradford Cox, who had influenza and walking pneumonia at the time. The group was also working with malfunctioning equipment, including an out-of-tune piano and an uncalibrated tape recorder. Cox later described the results of these sessions as sounding like “if you listen to Loveless on mushrooms, and I mean that in not a complimentary way”. In an interview with Pitchfork Media, Cox said that … More: |

Eric Carmen Songs: All by Myself, Make Me Lose Control, She Did It, Never Gonna Fall in Love Again, Hungry Eyes, Hey Deanie, That’s Rock $8.25 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: “All by Myself” is a power ballad written and performed by Eric Carmen in 1975. The verse borrows very heavily from the second movement (Adagio Sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18, which Carmen believed was in the public domain. Having found it was not, only after the record had been issued, Carmen had to come to an agreement with the Rachmaninoff estate. Early versions, therefore, only give writing credits to Carmen, but later versions also credit Rachmaninoff. The chorus borrows from a song “Let’s Pretend” that Carmen had written for the Raspberries in 1973. Carmen’s full version has an extended piano solo and lasts over seven minutes, although there is also an edited version at 4:22. The song was the first release from Carmen’s first solo LP after leaving the power pop group, the Raspberries, and was originally recorded by the author and released in December, 1975 to great success. It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 1 on Cash Box Top 100 Singles and number 12 in the UK. The single sold more than one million copies in the United States, and was certified gold by the RIAA in April 1976. In a 2006 poll for UK’s Five programme Britain’s Favourite Break-up Songs, Eric Carmen’s version of this song was voted seventeenth. Carmen’s original version has spawned numerous cover versions, by such artists as Céline Dion, Frank Sinatra, and Igudesman |
